What is the virtual microinternship?

International students seeking New Zealand work experience are invited to join the University of Auckland’s virtual microinternship in June 2023. 

The virtual microinternship provides international students with work experience with a well-known New Zealand company. The microinternship is run online so that students can participate from wherever they are. 

Join a team of 4 - 6 fellow international students to help a New Zealand employer find innovative ways to address a real business challenge.

Where? Join from wherever you are in the world.
Who? Current International Students at The University of Auckland.
What does it cost?  FREE for all international students.

  • Interview international students to better demonstrate their long-term cultural and economic contribution to the Auckland region.
  • Conduct an analysis of the Japanese and Singaporean markets to ensure the products are targeted to the right audiences and promotion is culturally responsive.
  • Working on a redevelopment project for a live client, determining the height, shape, and orientation of the new building, and the methos of construction.
  • Map out organisations in Aotearoa that support positive outcomes for Maori and Pacific people and identify opportunities to form partnerships.
  • Analysis of NZ’s tourism value proposition, and creation of new tourism operating model for a post-Covid NZ.
  • Analysis of and recommendations for market feasibility of the ImmerSAFEme virtual reality learning platform.
  • Investigate Wellington’s vulnerability to a natural disaster related to transport.
Note: This is an unpaid virtual microinternship which is designed to give you a range of critical skills and business connections to get you work-ready at the end of your degree.
FAQs:

  • Who can apply? All international students who are enrolled in the University of Auckland programmes at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.
  • I am a new student.  Can I apply? Yes.  There will be senior students and dedicated mentors to assist the progress.
  • I have participated in the past.  Can I apply again? Yes.  There will be different employers with different projects and you will develop additional skills.
  • Can I choose the employers or the projects I will work for? No.  You will be assigned to projects that are relevant to your study area.
  • Will there be projects related to medicine or law studies? It will depend on the employers that participate, but due to the nature of the specialities, relevant projects have not been offered in the past.  We will work with you to match your interests and skills you would like to develop.
