FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be eligible to apply for a post study work visa?
If your Offer for Admission is for UoA: Your Way, you will study 120 points of your masters programme onshore in New Zealand.
By completing 120 points of your programme onshore in New Zealand, you will study two semesters on the correct student visa thereby meeting the post study work visa requirement to study full-time for at least 30 weeks in New Zealand.
* Post-study work visa eligibility is determined by Immigration New Zealand (INZ) regulations, which are subject to change without notice. Prospective students should verify the latest requirements directly with INZ.
Do I need to achieve a minimum GPA to be eligible to complete my programme in New Zealand?
If your Offer for Admission is for UoA: Your Way, you will need to achieve a minimum GPA* at the end of the first semester (60 points).
Master of Engineering Project Management
• 4.0 (B- grade average)
Master of Civil Engineering
3.5 (B- grade average)
*If you do not achieve the minimum GPA, you will exit the programme with a Postgraduate Certificate in Civil Engineering or a Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering Project Management, and we will notify Immigration New Zealand about your change of status, which may affect your future visa applications.
What do I need to know about the tuition fees and the student visa requirements for UoA: Your Way?
Starting Online:
To begin your masters degree with the first 60 points of online study, you must pay tuition fees for at least one semester before commencing your programme.
You do not require a valid student visa to commence your programme online.
However, you can apply for your student visa as soon as you have an Offer of Admission without any conditions and a confirmed place. If you wish to apply for your student visa at this early stage, we strongly recommend paying for the entire masters degree* (equivalent to 180 points) before commencing your programme.
You may also be eligible for an Indirect Tax reduction at the applicable rate and a waiver of Health and Travel Insurance, for up to 60 points of online study in the masters programme, provided certain conditions are met.
* Please note that tuition fees may increase annually, and any outstanding balance for your 2026 enrolments will need to be paid later.
Completing on campus:
INZ recommends applying for a visa at least four months before the start of on-campus study. Therefore, you should apply for your student visa by at least 23 October 2025 to ensure you have a valid student visa to arrive on campus for Semester 1, 2026, to complete the remaining 120 points of your masters degree on-campus in New Zealand.
To be eligible for a student visa, you must provide proof of payment for one year of on-campus tuition fees for 2026* – the remaining 120 points of the masters degree you intend to complete on campus in New Zealand, as outlined in your Offer of Admission.
* Please note that tuition fees may increase annually, and any outstanding balance for your 2026 enrolments will need to be paid later.
What are the minimum technical requirements to study online?
You do not need to have the latest computer or fastest internet connection to study online. However, we do recommend a general comfort level with computers and the internet, along with the following minimum specifications.
· Laptop or PC (any Microsoft Windows-based PC, preferably running Microsoft Windows 10 or 11 or any Apple MacOS 10.4 and above) with a suitable web browser, Microsoft Word or other document producing capabilities and functional webcam.
· Headset/ear phones/microphone for listening/speaking/recording purposes
· Stable internet connection (recommended speed of 3Mbps)
· Designated quiet study space especially required for completing assignments/assessments
What happens if my student visa is delayed?
If your Offer for Admission is for UoA: Your Way, you will need a valid student visa to complete your programme onshore in New Zealand.
We strongly recommend that you arrive on campus by the FIRST day of the semester, otherwise you may put your eligibility for a post-study work visa at risk.
You must commence your studies on the correct student visa. Any other type of visa will not be accepted.
If you do not have a valid student visa, which enables you to arrive on campus by the FIRST day of the semester to complete the remaining 120 points onshore in New Zealand, you can either:
• Choose to exit the programme with a Postgraduate Certificate in Civil Engineering or a Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering Project Management.
• Request to suspend your studies for one semester to allow you sufficient time to arrive on campus for the following semester, subject to approval from the Programme Director on a case-by-case basis.
What happens if I don’t have a valid student visa to complete on campus?
If your Offer for Admission is for UoA: Your Way, you will need a valid student visa to complete your programme onshore in New Zealand.
If you are unable to obtain a valid student visa, which enables you to arrive on campus to complete the remaining 120 points onshore in New Zealand, you will not meet the eligibility criteria for a post-study work visa, but you can either:
• Choose to exit the programme with a Postgraduate Certificate in Civil Engineering or a Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering Project Management.
Or
• Choose to complete a further 60 points towards a Postgraduate Diploma* in Civil Engineering or Engineering Project Management from your home country fully online.
